Ludicology are play consultants and researchers who provide advice, research and training services for visitor attractions and cultural institutions, planners, designers and developers, local government and community organisations, children’s services and advocacy organisations.

Together with Playful Places, Ben and Mike at Ludicology have developed an audit framework for play in museums and cultural institutions, and have worked together with Dr Wendy Russell as part of a research team on two research projects, funded by Play Wales. The first research project explored changes in Wales since the introduction of the Welsh Play Sufficiency Duty, and the second further explored ways in which local authorities can go about securing play sufficiency.

In 2022-23 Playful Places and Ludicology worked with the Tees Valley Museum Group (TVMG) to audit their museums and galleries across the 4 local authorities, as part of the TVMG National Portfolio Organisation. Together they developed practical recommendations for each site with managers, as well as longer-term strategic recommendations for the TVMG consortium, including recommendations for staff training and CPD, the development of play policy, tools to support design for play, capacity building and play and risk management. ‘I just want to say the biggest thank to Ben and Mike for bringing their expertise and general magic to our Play-Work exhibition, right from planning stage and install, bringing all the stakeholders together, designing and building the space, advice throughout and for their involvement in the end of exhibition conference. It’s been a privilege working with them both and I’m looking forward to more shared projects in the future.
